Celtic `water'. several British rivers: The
Great Ouse rises in Northamptonshire and
winds its way across 250 km/160 mi to enter
the Wash N of King's Lynn. A large sluice
across the Great Ouse, near King's Lynn, was
built as part of extensive flood-control
works 1959. The Little Ouse flows for 38
km/24 mi along part of the Norfolk/Suffolk
border and is a tributary of the Great Ouse.
The Yorkshire Ouse is formed by the junction
of the Ure and Swale near Boroughbridge and
joins the river Trent to form the Humber. The
Sussex Ouse rises between Horsham and
Cuckfield and flows through the South Downs
to enter the English Channel at Newhaven.
